People who are planning to work in Dubai for companies on a standard two-year visa frequently ask us to clarify who is responsible for paying for their and their family's medical insurance Dubai and other emirates offer.

Here’s the answer! The provisions and requirements of Law No. 11 of 2013 Concerning Health Insurance in the Emirate of Dubai (the "Dubai Health Insurance Law") and Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Employment Relations (the "Employment Law") are applicable.

Under UAE law, an employer should offer health insurance UAE to its employees. This complies with Sections 8 and 9 of Article 13 of the Employment Law, which declare that "The Employer shall: (8) bear healthcare costs following the legislation in force in the UAE; and (9) bear the costs of insurance, contributions, and securities specified by the legislation in force."

The duties of the employer are already mentioned under the Dubai Health Insurance Law. According to Article 10 of the Dubai Health Insurance Law, the employer is required to do the following:

Provide health insurance in Dubai and the UAE for the company's employees following the applicable health insurance policy, with a clause requiring compliance with this law's requirements and any related resolutions.

Be ready to pay for such health insurance UAE coverage yourself rather than compelling the beneficiaries to do so.

Make sure that the health insurance UAE offered to the employees of the company is in effect for the duration of their employment with the firm.

If any of the employees are not holding health insurance Dubai and other emirates offer in line with the terms of this law, then bear the costs of health services and medical intervention in an emergency.

Provide health insurance cards for employees, that are issued from insurance companies in UAE to the firm.

Give the right health insurance in Dubai and the UAE policy upon the employees’ residence renewal or issuance.

Any other responsibilities outlined by the authority under resolutions issued by it in this regard.

Your company is in the line of duty to pay for your health insurance UAE by the aforementioned law provisions. However, if you are the one who sponsors your family members' visas, you are responsible for paying for the health medical insurance Dubai and the UAE offer. It’s mandatory under Article 11 of the Dubai Health Insurance Law. Many companies here already offer their employees' families access to the medical insurance Dubai and other emirates offer. So, you must ask about this with your employer.
