Abu Dhabi Police announced a new traffic rule regarding vehicle impoundment and increased the fine for numerous violations.


According to studies, violations contributed to 894 accidents in 2019 that resulted in the deaths of 66 people, necessitating a hike in fines through Law No. 5 of 2020, according to the police. The new rule of impounding vehicles in Abu Dhabi only applies to the emirate of Abu Dhabi and is not a federal one. The new rule addressing vehicle impoundment in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, which was based on Law No. 5 of 2020, did not conflict with the federal traffic law.

The list of offenses listed below carries fines up to Dh50,000 as well as impoundment penalties:


Illegal road racing is punishable by a maximum fine of Dh50,000 and impoundment.

Driving with invalid number plates is punishable by a maximum fine of Dh50,000 and vehicle impounding.

Damages to police cars may result in a maximum fine of Dh50,000 and vehicle impounding.

Jumping red lights carries a maximum punishment of Dh50,000, a vehicle impoundment, and a six-month driving license suspension.

Failure to give priority to pedestrians when crossing the street will result in a Dh5,000 fine and vehicle impounding.

Sudden deviation: Dh5,000 fine and impoundment of the vehicle.

A Dh5,000 fine and the car be impounded if excessive speed caused any accident.

Dh5,000 fine and vehicle impounding for tailgating.

If you let a child under 10 sit in the front seat of a car, you'll be fined Dh5,000 and the vehicle will be impounded.

If a driver gets more than Dh7,000 in cumulative traffic penalties, their vehicle will be impounded unless they pay up.

Unnecessary modifications to a vehicle's engine or chassis without any permission will result in a Dh10,000 fine and impoundment.

Speed limit exceeded by 60 km/h or more results in a Dh5,000 fine and vehicle impoundment.

In all other circumstances, claiming an impounded vehicle will cost Dh100 for each violation that led to its impoundment.


Police had previously stated that under the new decision, auctions would be held for any vehicles that remained unclaimed after three months of impounding. The violation will not be canceled if the vehicle's worth is less than the due fines; the unpaid balance will be added to the traffic file of the offender. Earlier, the seized vehicles were kept in yards for six months while owners were expected to claim them.
