The Abu Dhabi government is in talks to bring Covid-19 RT-PCR Testing costs under health insurance cover. Initially, this provision will be applied to residents in Abu Dhabi and later it will be rolled out to other Emirates as well.

As reported by a major online media outlet in UAE, talks with all the stakeholders are progressing towards a smooth implementation of the same. This development is very significant for Abu Dhabi residents especially the expatriate community. The cost of the PCR test is anywhere from Dh65 to Dh150 causing a huge financial burden especially on the lower sections of the society.

The RT-PCR test in the case of covid - 19 is usually covered through insurance under medical necessities. This step is a huge relief for Abu Dhabi residents as almost all of them are covered in one form of health insurance or the other.

Ambiguities to be Resolved

Medical insurance in Abu Dhabi is mandatory for employees hence employees can certainly take advantage of the same. But there are still ambiguities with regards to the number of tests that need to be covered by the health insurance in Abu Dhabi, and will there be standardized pricing for the test across the UAE. Furthermore, when it comes to group insurances, how will the PCR test numbers be allocated for the whole group, and so on.

All these ambiguities will be hopefully resolved soon giving huge financial relief to UAE residents.
